IT Internship Review

So for the past semester, I have had the amazing opportunity to intern at Milwaukee County as a intern in the IT Department, and I have gained valuable real-world experience in my major. It was frustrating, but it was an extremely valuable learning experience. Here are some of the key things I learned so far.

1 - Not to be afraid to ask questions. This show you are willing to learn and have genuine interest in the job.

2 -  Treat the internship like a real job. If you want the employer to take you serious then you'll need to treat the internship seriously.

3 -  Find a Mentor, While it might seem awkward in the long run you'll gain a multitude of experience from them.

MATC Review

I chose MATC for a number of reasons. One of my first was the most important,  financially it was smarter. Technical colleges are a lot cheaper than traditional universities. Additionally, I also heard wonderful things about MATC from the community. Currently the program is helping me reach my goals, thanks to MATC curriculum I managed to secure an internship where I am learning and growing with the company. One of my favorite things about the school is the teachers who have real world IT experience and love sharing it. Another reason I loved the program is because they have ties with other top Wisconsin colleges and have programs to help transitioning into those schools easier. MATC campuses also have an excellent academic center with brilliant and helpful individuals.

Inside the mind of a procrastinator - Tim Urban

Tim Urban's insight on why people procrastinate. This Ted Talk claims the individual has no control over it. That a procrastionator suffers from it the same way an obsese person can't stop eating or how an depressed person couldn't stop feeling depressed.  It quickly grabbed my attention, it had the right amount of humor but at the same time still was very serious. It brought up great points some of  which I could relate to, had funny diagrams which made following easier and while it was short hit home why people procrastinate.

Here is Tim's humorous diagram of how a Non-Procrastionator's brain works. This person's brain is pretty much always focusing on the topic. The brain is pretty much held together by something called the Rational Decison Maker.

In contrast we have a Procrastionator's brain.

In this example we see something called the Instant Gratification Monkey(IGM), which veers the Rational decison maker of course. The IGM pretty much lives for the moment and while it knows your 1000 word essay has to be done in 24 hours, but  instead it wants to watch youtube videos about The Walking Dead or spend 3 hours browsing tvtropes hopping link to link  of your favorite game of thrones character. It doesn't understand the concept of hard work, don't do something if it's difficult is the monkey's motto. It unreliable and even worst the Rational Decison-Maker doesn't know how to fight it. Luckly it has a champion.

While inactive most of the time the panic monster shows up when a deadline is coming up or some nasty consquence.  It can easily scare off the monkey and it very effective. Which is why someone who couldn't write an 1000 word essay is suddenly on track.

All in all easily one of the best Teds Take's which explained why I waited a day before this assignment was due to start and also why I'm watching Empire while I type out this blog.

Benefits of Tweeting

Twitter is used to share information instantly, and to connect worldwide. With hundreds of millions of users and millions of Tweets being sent each day, there is a great opportunity for businesses to reach a global audience of customers.

No matter what type of business you are twitter has a number of uses. One of them is spreading Brand awareness and maintaining an online reputation. Starbucks is just one of these companies, regularly it posts about its new ideas about upcoming flavors of coffee's and their tasty new food options. It also hosts a Q&A on twitter. This is helpful because it used to discover top influences and learn more about your audience. So in short it can be an invaluable when trying expand your market.

Another option is using twitter to gather knowledge and even take shots on the competition. One example is the tweet war that happened between Burger King and Wendy's. It all started when Wendy's twitting about it's 4 for 4 menus.

Next Burger King decides to one up them with their new 5 for 4 deal.

To many could seem like a humorous way to throw shade at the competition. Many thought that Wendy's would respond and after a fan asked how they replied with tastier food.  Which was a clever way to retaliate.  Proof that twitter is a creative way to see how the competition is doing. So for a business twitter is an invaluable tool when building connections to customers and engaging your audience. With that in mind you can gain a network of loyal customers.
